Choosing A Dog? – Check This Out First

One of the great joys of life is acquiring a new dog. Whether it is a lively fun seeking puppy or a mature dog from a rescue centre there is the excitement of collecting the dog and the eager anticipation of the pleasures of dog ownership to come. But how can you ensure a long and happy relationship? You need to learn about dog care and training as well as considering your own situation before you even start looking for a dog.

Considerations

At Home

Are there children in your household.

Do you have other pets.

Do you have a reasonable sized yard or garden.

Have you considered the dog’s toilet arrangements.

Are members of your family prepared to spend time training and exercising your dog.

Can you fund good quality feed, some vet’s bills, insurance and kennel stays if necessary

Dog Breeds, Size and Weight

You will sometimes need to handle your dog e. g. grooming, trimming nails, bathing or lifting onto scales for a weight check. Obviously, the size and weight of your dog will make this easy (Chihuahua at 2. 70 kg to 3. 63 kg) or near impossible (St Bernard at 75 kg to 91 kg)

Exercise

Exercise is a key factor in maintaining your dog’s health. Small dogs like Jack Russell Terriers will not need as much daily exercise as a working breed such as a German Shepherd.

You need to decide how much time can be given to the task. The less time available the more important it is to acquire a smaller dog.

Home Environment

If you like your house to be warm some dogs may find it distressing – a Shih Tzu dog for instance or a dog with a thick coat. If you have an immaculate home filled with expensive furniture, you will need to think carefully about the sort of dog you intend to buy especially if you want a puppy.

Grooming Your Dog

You need to groom your dog on a regularly. Size comes into it but so does the type of coat. A short coated dog is obviously going to pick up less dirt, and mud. and be easier to clean and groom. A muddy dog may require washing. This needs a facility such as an old fashioned tin bath. You could use your shower or even your own bath but it means a lot of cleaning up afterwards.

Temperament

You’ll find that working breeds, a broad group, including everything from guard dogs to sheep dogs are often more stubborn and tough-minded. Terriers are often bossy and a little aggressive. Hounds are usually relaxed and friendly, but sometimes difficult to train.

Carry out some research into different breed characteristics. Do this on line and ask your vet’s opinion.

You will be looking to compare the following points.

Energy level

Activity and playfulness levels

Affection and Loyalty levels

Intelligence

Aggression (towards people/other dogs/other pets)

Ease of training

Heat and cold tolerance

Compatibility with people and other animals

Some Breed Comparisons:

Labrador

This breed is good with children and quite intelligent. They can be hyperactive if they do not get enough exercise because they are basically a working dog.

Golden Retriever

These dogs are similar in temperament to the Labrador but have less tendency to hyper activity

Poodle

An intelligent dog. It has an excellent temperament. It was used as a hunting dog in times gone by so it is quite tough by nature.

Beagle

Friendly, clever and not too big, making them suitable as a family dog.

They can be over energetic if not exercised. They respond well to firm training.

Cairn Terrier

Busy little dogs that adapt well to children. They are usually of good quiet temperament

Collie

The Collie and the smaller Shetland are both calm, gentle and tolerant breeds that usually do well with children. They do need some constructive play i. e. fetching a ball etc.

German Shepherd

Very intelligent but it is a big dog and needs exercise and constructive play. It is loyal and a good guard dog. However, a German Shepherd must be properly trained.

Cross-Bred Dogs

Come in all shapes and sizes and typically should not suffer from in-bred temperament faults.

Owning a dog is great fun but you need to think about management before you take on your new “best friend”.

How to Make Cat Nip Toys

Cat nip toys are a source of enjoyment for the cats. These toys can be purchased from the market and can be easily made at the home as well. The basic construction of a cat nip toy consists of a pouch in which dried cat nip is filled. The pouch can be of different materials ranging from ordinary cloth to animal skins. If nothing is available, a cat nip toy can be made simply by filling an unused sock with cat nip and sewing its open end.

Why Do Cats Use Scratching Posts?

Cats have an inherent nature that leads them to want to scratch and climb. If you haven’t given them a proper tool to do this on, then they will proceed to do it on whatever they can find, including your furniture, curtain, counters, or your leg! Why exactly does a cat feel the need to scratch? For one thing, they just find it to be a fun activity. It also works to knock off the dead layers of nail that their claws have.

Choosing a Dog Breed: Small Dogs

You want to buy or adopt a dog. You have even decided that you want a small dog. However, it is wise to research the different small dog breeds, before you make this lifelong investment. Small dogs typically live longer than large dogs: usually about 12-20 years. After all, great things can come in small packages. So what are the best, most popular and most adorable small breeds of dog?

Yorkshire Terrier- The pointy ears and long bangs of hair make the ‘Yorkie’ a distinctive dog. They require regular grooming. This dog is a spirited and playful little dog. Its spunky nature is seen as an asset by some. These lap dogs make excellent, loyal companions, and like lots of attention. They travel well. It is no coincidence that the Yorkie is one of the most popular breeds.

Dachshund- The highlight of Picnic Day, an annual event at UC Davis in Davis, California are the dachshund races. There is nothing more entertaining than watching these little dogs race across the Rec Hall floor. Of course, not every dachshund actually makes it to the finish line. Don’t mistake the look of this little dog; they actually make good watchdogs. They require regular grooming and are not good around small children. However, they are loyal family dogs with the right training.

West Highland White Terrier- The handsome ‘Westie’ is a spirited, yet intelligent dog. They are legitimate terriers: energetic and a little feisty. Westies are playful and devoted dogs. They make good watchdogs. They are not for a home with small children and other pets. Westies require regular grooming and would prefer having a backyard.

Poodle- There are 3 varieties of poodle: standard, miniature, and toy. The miniature and toy poodles are small in size. Poodles should not be judged by their covers. The dignified poodle is actually one of the world’s smartest dogs. They require both regular grooming and exercise. Poodles make excellent watchdogs. They are good around other pets, but not around small children. Fancy haircuts are optional.

Shetland Sheepdog- The ‘sheltie’ has the look of a small collie. These dogs are affectionate and loyal. They are also energetic and protective. Having a herding instinct, they like to chase things. Shelties can coexist with children and other pets. They are intelligent and highly trainable. Shelties have a shedding season, and need regular grooming.

Shih Tzu- The adorable little shih tzu makes a good indoor companion. This breed does well with other pets. They like lots of attention. These dogs also require regular grooming. The shih tzu is spirited and has decent watchdog ability. This affectionate breed comes from China, though they have become a popular pet in the West.

Scottish Terrier- You may recognize the distinctive look of the ‘Scottie’ from the old Monopoly piece; having a beard, brushy eyebrows, and pointy ears. This breed is dignified, yet energetic; intelligent, yet independent. With the right socialization and training, Scotties can be a family dog. They require regular grooming and exercise.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel- This distinctive looking dog is associated with Kings Charles I and Charles II who owned similar spaniels. These pets are both lap dogs and sporting dogs. Even though they have the abilities of a retriever, they are content as companion dogs. They do well indoors and are affectionate and gentle. They require regular grooming and exercise.

Miniature Schnauzer- This distinguished gentleman of a dog is recognized by his beard, bushy eyebrows and dark or grey coat. With the right training, this breed can do well with families and other dogs. However, they are not good around smaller pets like cats. They make excellent watchdogs. They require some grooming, but they shed very little. This can be a good breed for someone with allergies. They can adapt to apartments, but require exercise.

Chihuahua- This companion dog has lately become a fashionable Hollywood pet. They are the smallest dog breed and they live on average of 14-18 years. Chihuahuas require minimal grooming, but don’t do well in cold climates. Good in apartments, they are very loyal to 1 or 2 people. Chihuahuas are not good for large families and small children. They make good watchdogs.

Pug- This dog has an expressive, wrinkled face and a curly tail. They resemble little bulldogs, but are cheerful pets. Pugs do well around other dogs and are great with children. They require minimal grooming and are good apartment dogs. These loyal dogs make good watchdogs.

Pomeranian- This very little breed has a very fluffy coat that can be different colors such as gold. They are an energetic and spirited breed. These dogs do well in apartments, but not typically with small children. They make good watchdogs. Pomeranians require regular grooming.

Boston Terrier- These dogs are dark with white markings and have distinctive bat ears. Smart dogs, they make loyal companion dogs. They do well with other pets, though not always with other dogs and small children. Boston terriers can do well in apartments and with families. They require minimal grooming, but can be prone to drooling and breathing problems.

Maltese- This adorable breed is very small with a long, silky white coat. They are intelligent, playful, and affectionate. These dogs can be good with other pets, but not usually with small children. The Maltese likes to be devoted to one person. They are good apartment dogs and good watchdogs. They like attention and need regular grooming.

French Bulldog- ‘Frenchies’ might be a medium dog, but only by weight. They have bat ears and clownish, expressive faces. Playful and affectionate, they make good companions. They are good with other pets, but not always with other dogs, and typically not good for small children. Frenchies need minimal grooming, but can be prone to drooling. They are good watchdogs, and don’t like exercising in high heat.

Goldendoodles and hidden dangers by Dee Gerrish

To just say “don’t let your Goldendoodle sleep in your bed because it could cause serious problems” would be like telling you not to get into your car because you MIGHT have a serious car accident! Heck, I recall when I was 15 years old and just learning to drive, I accidentally hit my mom’s car right in the driveway!!!

Selecting a dog breed or, more importantly, choosing the right dog breed for you and your family can sometimes be one of the toughest choices you’ll ever have to make; especially when you walk into the dog breeder’s yard not knowing exactly what sort of dog you should be looking at or what you should be looking for in any given dog.

The fact of the matter is, you don’t have to get that confused when it comes to selecting a dog breed — be it for you, your family, or whomever. With that said, I may get away with saying “if you follow these 3 very basic steps to choosing a dog breed, you may well be able to walk over to your dog breeder knowing exactly what your dog would look/ act like in your mind way before you get there”. I say this because a number of people have had successes with something similar to what I’m about to reveal.

Without further ado, FIRST, you need to know the different types of dog breeds there are out there. Would you rather have a small dog like a Chihuahua, a Pomeranian, Yorkshire terrier, or a much bigger breed like the Great Dane, Labradors, Boxers, and what have you? If you asked me, I’d say my favourite is the Pomeranian simply because of how posh and cute they look. Anyway, knowing these, the size and breed of your desired dog will help make your choice much easier.

SECONDLY, when selecting a dog breed, you need to find a reputable dog breeder regardless of where you live, currently. Wait, did you know that dogs too carry traits from their parents that may determine their general behaviour over time? For example, some dog breeds are more prone to illness compared to the others. That said, if you go to a reputable dog breeder who only breeds healthy dogs or dogs with well-behaved bloodlines, then you’re more than likely covered in this area.

LASTLY, you need to ask around. Do you know anyone who’s owned a particular dog breed? How do you think that breed will go down with you? However, if you don’t know anyone, you may start by using the internet. There are tonnes of information out there.

Of course there’s much more to choosing the right dog breed than highlighted here.

If you would love to get more information on choosing a dog breed, I HIGHLY recommend you check this link on Selecting a Dog Breed out. It will make you life a whole lot easier by guiding you through picking the right dog for you and your family.

Choosing the Right Dog Bed

Posted under: Chihuahua Articles

Like humans, dogs need their own space, they need sleep, and relaxation, and the best way to achieve this is with a quality dog bed. Dog beds are one of the most important dog supplies that you need to invest in when you bring home your cute puppy.

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and so do dog beds. There is definitely no substitute when it comes to measuring your dog for selecting dog beds, but here is a quick thumb rule that you will help you in trying different size beds:

1.  All extra-small dogs have their weight around or under 10 lbs and this includes dog breeds like the Chihuahuas, small terriers, poodle and any other miniature or teacup dog breeds. Most of the dog beds designed for small or extra small dogs as well as cats should be almost 19” long and 19” wide or even smaller. The nesting type of dog beds should have a diameter of less than 22 inches.

2.  Different type of small dogs come in different sizes although their weight will be less than 25 pounds. Some of the small dog breeds include Dachshunds, terriers, Lhasa Apso, Miniature Schnauzer, small Poodles, Pug, Whippet, Shih Tzu, and many others. Most of the small dog beds have been designed in such a way that they will fit small dogs and will be in the range of 25-30” long and 25-30” wide. The nesting type of dog beds should have a diameter of around 25-30 inches.

3.  The medium dogs stand 13-21″ tall from the ground to the shoulder and will weigh anywhere from 30 to 60 pounds. Some of the popular breeds include the Cocker Spaniel, Australian Cattle Dog, Finnish Spitz, Keeshond and Bulldogs. While choosing nest dog beds you need to ensure that the bed has a diameter of 30-35 inches and while the pillow dog beds should measure 35” long by 35” wide.

4.  Large dogs stand anywhere from 21-26 inches tall and weigh anywhere between 60 to 90 pounds. Some of the popular breeds include Chows, Akita, Dalmatian, English Setter, Doberman Pinscher, Golden Retriever, as well as the Siberian Husky. The nest dog beds for large dogs should have a diameter of 40-45 inches while the pillow dog beds should measure 45” long by 45” wide.

5.  Extra Large dogs stand around 26″ tall and weigh almost 90 lbs. You need to ensure that nest dog beds for such dogs are at the least 50 inches in diameter while the pillow dog beds should measure 50” long by 50” wide. Some of the extra-large dog beds can even run up to 6 feet in length and are perfect of popular large dog breeds like Great Pyrenees, Great Dane, Irish wolfhound and others.

You need to remember that if you have a large or extra large dog at home then the fabric of the dog beds need to be durable and the frame style should be able to take your dog’s weight. There are some dog beds that are mostly made from commercial grade materials and hence can hold almost 200 lbs.

Choosing a dog breed

Posted under: Chihuahua Articles

Buying a new pet, especially a dog can be very exciting. It is worth considering your lifestyle choices and those who live with you before choosing a dog breed. Choosing any family pet may depend on several factors which must be taken into account. Perhaps the most important question is: are you prepared to take good care of the animal and treat it accordingly?

If the answer to the above question is yes, the next step is to decide the reason you would like a dog. There can be many reasons such as protection, as a pet for a child, as a show dog or simply for the sake of companionship. This is an important factor in choosing the correct breed.

After that you should consider your living circumstances as many of the other decisions will depend on this. You should consider the area in which you live: do you live in the town or countryside? This can limit how often and where you can take a dog for walks. Next you should consider the size of your house: do you have ample space for the new dog to cohabit with the owners and any existing pets? Does your house have a garden where the creature can play or rest? It is also worth thinking about how often the pet will be left alone each day. If you are going for an expensive rare breed this will obviously have to be very limited; however on the flipside if you decide to choose a big energetic dog then you still may not be able to leave it alone for extended periods.

Another side of lifestyle considerations is the associated costs with raising a pet. Ideally you should have a budget for basic needs such as foods and cleaning products. You should also take into account the possibility of other events happening. For example a situation may arise where you will need to leave the dog with somebody for an extended period of time on a paid basis. You should also think about health costs and possible veterinary services. A limited budget also means that your ability in choosing specially bred dogs may be more limited. However this should not stop you from being able to find a good pet.

Pets like human beings require attention and care. To many people their dog is a normal member of the household. Dogs must be given regular exercise and training to keep them active and in a healthy state. They must have necessarily health checks and be given essential vaccinations. Taking the dog down to the park for a walk is something you should fit into your weekly schedule.

Once you have acknowledged the extent of your lifestyle and your ability in raising a pet, it is time to decide the type of breed. The first thing to think about is the size. Make sure to discuss this with other members of the family as this is a big limitation on what breed of dog you may choose. Do you really have enough space for a German Shepard? Or are you prepared to deal with small Chihuahuas running around the house and having to look for them from time to time?

Perhaps one of the most underestimated things about any pet is the aging of the animal. Animals have a different lifespan to human beings. The reason that this is important is as important as buying the pet in the first place. Considering many people buy dogs for company, a family can very easily become attached to the animal. The pet becomes a ‘member’ of the family. For many people loosing a pet can be as shocking as loosing a very close relative.

Once you have planned and taken into account all factors, its time to make the exciting trip down the pet store or going to see a few dogs with other family members. Then you can hopefully make a decision as to who you would like to welcome to your house as new member.

Choosing A Dog In Your Senior Years

Posted under: Chihuahua Articles

As a person reaches their golden years they may want to have some companionship. Many of them look to owning a dog as a way to have a constant companion. This is a great idea, as a dog will give them unconditional and unrestricted love. Many people find that as they get older and they start to lose their friends that they need something such as this to fill a void in their life. If you are faced with the decision of choosing a dog to be by your side and to grow old with you then here are some things to keep in mind.

The first thing that you should consider when choosing a dog to have in your older years is how active you need that dog to be. There are seniors that are extremely active, sometimes more active than people that are 20 years younger than them. These seniors would benefit from having a dog that can be active for things such as walks but also would be happy just to lie around at their feet when necessary. Other seniors will benefit from having a dog that will just be a companion but does not need a lot of activity to keep it healthy.

Another thing that you would want to keep in mind when choosing a dog is if it will be around a lot of children. If you have an active family life and your grandchildren, or great grandchildren are around frequently the you would not want to choose a breed that has a reputation of not liking little children. Some smaller breeds that are perfect for many seniors also are very protective of their owners. While this can be beneficial, as the dog will no doubt be able to hear things that the owner can’t, you also need to keep in mind that this kind of dog might not warm up easily to others.

All things considered, here are a few all around good dog breeds for you to choose from. These dogs make good companions that require little exercise and will give you many years of happiness.

The Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a great choice for seniors. It not only requires little exercise but it is very faithful and will be a loyal companion that will stick by your side through thick and thin.

The Poodle

The poodle is one of the most intelligent dogs that there is. They make a fantastic pet, are very loyal to their owners and warm up to people easily. If you have family members visiting on a regular basis then a poodle would be a good choice for a senior dog.

The Papillion

The Papillion is a fantastic breed, although they do have a little bit more energy than other breeds. They will not only make an enjoyable pet but they will also be very faithful and are good around other people. At times they can be a little bit standoffish but all in all they make a fantastic companion.

These are just a few of the many breeds that are well suited for those who are reaching their golden years. It is a personal decision that you will have to make but by owning a dog at this point in your life you will have a constant companion for years to come.

Puppy Toilet Training – Choosing the Best Method

Posted under: Chihuahua Articles

Toilet training puppies can be done at any point in time but is best begun as soon as the new puppy arrives at your house However the later you begin the more challenging the training will be and the more time it will take. You will need to choose which approach you are going to use to potty train puppy preferably before puppy gets home.

It is essential to have a plan and be clear on the method you are going to use.   Altering how you train or relaxing your enforcement of the training approach will only bewilder the puppy and make the training longer.

You ought to expect the training to take around two to three months however when you are finished it is unlikely you will need to potty train puppy again.

There are many methods used for puppy house training and, though they are not the only methods, many dog trainers and vets recommend crate training or paper training.   The approach you utilize can depend on a number of things. Your home arrangements, time free to instruct, physical capacity and simply personal choice will all be elements in choosing the puppy toilet training technique that suits you.

The first technique is paper training which is essentially training your puppy to eliminate only on newspaper. The newspaper is in an area that you choose, it is absorbent, cheap and readily available and is able to be collected and disposed of when used.

This method to potty train puppy is the best solution for people who are in an apartment and have no yard or for those who can not get outdoors such as the ill or aged. It is best for smaller to medium puppies as the amount of waste from a larger dog can be too much to handle. In addition if you are planning to train your puppy to eliminate outside but are unable to do so right now, such as in the middle of winter, it can be utilised as an interim method.

The second approach is crate training which is utilised to train your puppy to eliminate outdoors.   This method is commonly accepted as the quickest. Some detractors have labelled it as cruel however most seem to disagree so you will have to determine if it is right for you and your puppy.

Crate training involves the employment of a small indoor kennel to confine your puppy when you are not supervising them and is based on the principle that a dog dislikes sleeping where it eliminates. Although it’s speed is an advantage it involves a great deal of time and it is best suited for medium to big dogs. You will have to be able to spend a lot of time in the initial few weeks of  puppy house training actively supervising.   You will also need to be on hand during the day to let puppy out of the crate at two to three hour intervals.

Whichever method you select the results are definitely worth the time and energy. Toilet training puppies is not easy, especially if it’s the first time but the key is to be consistent and persistent with whatever method you choose. A new puppy is one of the most adorable creatures on the earth and particularly when properly taught is a tremendous addition to the family.

Father of three and puppy lover, John shares information to help people turn their loved doggy family member into well adjusted, obedient and valuable contributor to the family. See my site for great resources to train your dog http://www. puppytoilettrainingsite. com/

Choosing the Right Breed of Dog For Me

Posted under: Chihuahua Articles

When you are ready to get a dog, you’ll find that there are many breeds available to you. Whether you go to a breeder or you are curious about the background of some of the lovely dogs you can find at a shelter, you’ll discover that being aware of the different groups of dogs might help you make your pick.

If you are someone who is looking for a dog that will require lots of regular exercise and who has a great deal of natural energy and exuberance, consider sporting dogs. Sporting dogs are very active and alert and do require a fairly constant schedule of activity. Some examples include Cocker Spaniels and Golden Retrievers.

Dogs from the hound group were bred for hunting, whether they hunt with their eyes and with their nose. Like sporting dogs, they do require regular and fairly intense exercise, but they are also quite diverse. Make sure that you know if you are getting a breed that bays, because the sound is quite loud. Beagles and Norwegian Elkhounds are a part of this group.

Working dogs, on the other hand, have been bred to perform certain specific jobs, whether it means that they have instincts to herd sheep or guard property. Siberian Huskies, Boxers and Doberman Pinschers are all members of this group.

Terriers are often distinguished by their small size and their bright and energetic personalities. They are usually not dogs that are friendly with other dogs, and in the past they were bred to kill rats and other vermin. They are quite lively and you may want to think about it before you bring them into a house with small children. Jack Russell Terriers and Welsh Terriers are part of this group.

Toy dogs are, as the name implies, small and bred to be house dogs. They are great for people who don’t have a lot of space and make good apartment dogs. Consider some of the very popular breeds like Chihuahuas or Yorkshire Terriers.

Herding dogs were bred to protect their charges from predators and to make animals move from place to place. Some members of this group might surprise you, like the Welsh Corgis and Swedish Vallhunds who are just about a foot tall and capable of driving cattle into pastures. These dogs are great companions, but do require good socialization and training. Border collies and Pulis are two examples of this type of dog.

Non-sporting dogs are very diverse, and this is something of a catch-all territory. They do not fit into any other group, but they might share characteristics with them. Poodles, Bulldogs and the Japanese Shiba Inu fall into this category, as do the long haired Lhasa Apso and the Keeshond.

When you are thinking about choosing a breed of dog, consider what your requirements are in terms of temperament and think about what the dog itself needs in terms of exercise, space or socialization. This is an important choice for you to make, so think about the options and make sure that you get a companion animal who suits your space and lifestyle.
