I have much experience owning medium to large dogs, but caring for very small dogs is quite different, and I recently and unexpectedly became the owner of two small chihuahua puppies. They are now 12 weeks old. I am muddling my way through, and trying to do my best to care for them properly. I have done some research and have seen that the small pups can suffer from low blood sugar if they go too long between meals. I have been pretty much free feeding them thus far because I was fearful of this. I would however like to get them on some sort of better feeding schedule to help with housebreaking. My questions is, at 12 weeks, should they be eating 2, 3, or 4 times a day? How many hours between meals is it safe for them to go? What time should I give them their last meal in the evening, so that they have plenty of time to potty before bedtime, to prevent accidents? Are they ok to go through the night without eating, or is that too long? Also, with the water, I leave it out for them at all times. I really don’t want to limit their water, but they seem to pee pee A LOT. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Okay I have a 2 week old chihuahua, the mother isnt around. I am feeding it formula (trying anyhow) about every 5 hours. She is drinking like. . . maybe a half of a 2 liter bottle cap of it each time. (idk how else to describe it lol) Is this normal or how much at this age should she eat? She does not like being held and fights being fed. I feel bad forcing her.
Also my other questions, stimulating to make her urine/defecate. How often should i do it? I usually do it immediately after she eats. but the times ive done it barely any urine has come out. Twice she has peed on the bed a lot so i guess im not timing the stimulation right. And also when i stimulate her to poo, how much poop comes out? I havent seen it yet. . idk whether to try more or if there is nothing to come out. Thank you. . . Im a bit lost lol.
I dont have money for a vet. But ive been reading all over the internet i got the idea of everything. I get her to pee but i cant get her to defecate because she squirms SOO badly and cries. its really sad. . i cant do anything with her like that. Also most of the time she wont even drink out of the bottle, she fights me on it. its really difficult. My small chihuahua has been on Natural Choice Small Puppy Bites since he has been able to eat kibble, and he has done well with it. However, I worry sometimes that he is not getting enough nutrients or nourishment, and have looked into feeding RAW or perhaps a different brand of kibble.
I just want my dog to be the healthiest he can possibly be.
Great so far everyone, I’ll keep it all in mind.
One more question I’d like to add, are what brands of dry food have been your best experiences in terms of feeding to small mouths?
