My chihuahua puppy is active and healthy at 3 months of age. Unfortunately, he’s had some problems with hypoglycemia, specifically when I had him on the feeding schedule my breeder gave me. After trial and error with different feeding schedules, I started just leaving out a handful of kibble for him all day and he nibbles as he pleases and has one or two pieces left over by bedtime. He’s not an overeater and is close to 100% potty trained and since I started doing this, he’s had no problems with hypoglycemia and has also left our cat’s food alone.
I am concerned, though, that he’ll change as he get older. Will this encourage him to be an overeater in the future and make him overweight or is this feeding method okay since he’s housetrained and doesn’t gobble? I just want to make sure I have the healthiest pup possible!
Reason I ask here is to get in touch with people with experience with toy dogs. We live overseas in Japan at a military base and we’ve found that the only vet here isn’t that knowledgeable in breed specifics. We don’t have much choice and it’s difficult to communicate with the off base veterinarians.

I adopted a Chihuahua puppy, I was told she was 6 weeks. I understand that she is still too young to be away from her mother, but she was rescued. She is very happy, bounces around & plays with lil toys I got her. She poops & pee’s regularly. Since she has not got her teeth in yet, I have been feeding her a milk replacer by Hartz. I know it may not be the best, but that was the only formula in milk form I found. I have come to notice she does not seem to want water, which does tend to worry me. I feed her around 3-4 times a day. Around 1 oz or more, sometimes she eats more sometimes less. She’ll usually eat, play a bit, then be asleep for a couple hours. I noticed that she does a lot of licking, as to my arms and my husbands as well, just out skin in general, is there a reason for this? & this happens also when she is not hungry.
Can anyone give me any tips for this lil girl?
She seems to be doing fine, just worried cause she is still young.

I have a new litter of Chihuahua puppies born today. Four are healthy and strong and I have one runt. I have purchased Hartz supplemental formula for puppies and have bottle feed the runt. The runt is still with mom but I am not sure how often I should feed the puppy since I don’t want to take it away from mom completely. I just want to help it along some. What do you recommend for a feeding schedule and how often since mom is also involved. The puppy is half the size of the other 4 pups so it gets pushed out of the way quite a bit.
