Dog Grooming for Pet Competition

Posted under: Chihuahua Articles

Pet owners choose to shear, trim and custom-care for their beloved pooches for various reasons. The first would be for hygiene purposes, because a well-cared for pooch, is a happy and clean pooch. Secondly, the owner would impose the best dog grooming for his or her pooch for solely for appearance purposes. For instance, poodle owners can have the advantage of enrolling their little pooches for pet competitions.

In recent times, pooch beauty competitions are fast becoming the trend for pet owners to indulge through. In the US, the Intergroom USA is an annually-based competition where the qualified pet owners are entitled to receive a handsome cash prize. Basically, pet owners have turned their ownership rights to a higher level. These pet owners spend hundreds of dollars in attaining the best dog grooming in order to secure a place in such pet competitions.

Typically in this competition, the pooches are displayed on stage for the judges to view and assess. The shortlisted candidates will then be competing against one another in the talent segment. These are the usual program itinerary for pooch shows. Not only poodle, but all types of pure and mix breeds are welcomed for the show. In five consecutive years, a terrier had won such a competition in the US, which is a surprise for many because this type of pooch is incontrollable in public. A well trained pooch is a surety for a promising contestant in the pooch show.

Rottweiler, Chihuahua and Shih Tzu breeds have their own categories in these sorts of competitions. These pooches are well-trained and are strictly bound to a leash in the duration of the competition. The owners are required to keep an eye on their respective pooches at all times during the show.

If you are an owner who requires career excellence and you are prepared to become an exhibitor of your pooch, then you can try acquiring the best dog grooming services in your region to ensure a successful run in the pooch stage competitions.

Toy Fox Terrier Dog Breed Description, History, Grooming, Health Issues and Living Conditions

Posted under: Chihuahua Articles

Description: In America the Toy Fox Terrier is called Amertoy or Toy Terrier. This breed has a domed skull and a small muzzle. The eyes are dark in colour and round in shape. The nose is black, in most dogs, except in the chocolate coated dogs. This dog has V shaped ears that are erect. The dog stands at 10 inches and their weight is 3½-7 pounds. This breed is in the terrier group. The tail is docked, in countries that permit docking. The coat is short and thick and is tri-coloured with white being the main colour, and you can then see black and tan or tan. Other colours do sometimes pop up but may not be accepted by some show standards.

History: The Toy Fox Terrier was developed in America in the 1930′s. As with a lot of the Terrier family it was first used as a working dog to hunt rats and mice for the farmers. This breed is a descendent from the Smooth Fox Terrier, which was crossed with toy breeds such as the Miniature Pinscher, Italian Greyhound, Chihuahua, and the Manchester Terrier. This was done to miniaturize the dog, to the dog we see today called the Toy Fox Terrier. There is another group that believes the Toy Fox Terrier has only come from the Smooth Fox Terrier by selective breeding of the smallest Smooth Fox Terrier to miniaturize this line of dog and that no other dog breeds were used. The Toy Fox Terrier was recognized by the UKC in 1936 and then by the AKC in 2000.

Temperament: This may be a small dog but is very robust, as are most of the Terrier family. This is a hardy dog that is intelligent curious and active staying active all its life. This dog is loyal, loving, and is sensitive. This is a dog that has high levels of energy, and is inquisitive. This breed has got all the Terrier qualities and will still hunt and kill mice and rats, so small pets such as rats and rabbits are not a good idea with this breed. The Toy Fox Terrier is small but will still need a firm consistent leader to meet its natural balance and to bring out the best in the breed. Small Dog Syndrome is not good and this breed, if they think they are the pack leader, will become yappy and over demanding. This dog is great to train and with its sharp intelligent brain learns quickly. The Toy Fox Terrier is used for assisting the disabled and can work well for hard of hearing and other disabled groups, around the home. This dog is good with children providing the child understands to be a small leader. The dog will stay puppy like all its life which is about 13-14 years.

Health issues: While, over all, this is a good healthy breed of dog there are lines that can get stifle or Legg calve Perthes a syndrome, that is of the hip joint and is degenerative, both of which can be seen in the Toy breeds. Diet is important with this breed as allergies to corn, beet pulp, and wheat can develop.

Grooming: The Toy Fox Terrier is easy to keep smart and clean all that is needed is brushing the coat occasionally. This breed is a light shedder.

Living conditions: The Toy Fox Terrier is good for apartment living and is happy and active in an apartment, not needing a garden. This dog will still need good daily walks as it is an active breed and so needs to release a lot of energy and fulfil its need to have a great look around and explore.

Chihuahua Dog Breed History, Temperament, Grooming and Description

Posted under: Chihuahua Articles

Unlike other breeds, the Chihuahua breed can vary in height, and are more measured by their weight. American and British standards state this breed should weigh no more than six pounds, but the British standards, recommends between two and four pounds. This breed can grow as tall as 15 inches, this being the exception rather than the rule. This breed has both long and short hair Chihuahuas. This is classed in the tiny toy dog size category. They have a well rounded head and a short pointed muzzle.

However, these have a soft spot on top of their skull, which has usually closed by adulthood. This breed has beautiful round eyes large in appearance and set well apart. With erect ears, that are large in look. Their tail curls over the back or to the side, this is long and is sickle shaped. The coat comes in both short coats; wavy or flat coat and long coat. All colours are acceptable in this breed. This includes splashed and solid. A few examples of colour are red, cream, blue, black, chocolate, and black and tan, and merle, though this is not recognised by all show standards. This dog can live up to 17 years but between 10 and 17 years is more likely.

History: The Chihuahua breed comes from South America and is native to Mexico; this is how it gets its name from the state of Chihuahua. This is the oldest breed of dog on the American continent. Here we see the smallest breed of dog in the world. This dog was thought to be sacred to the Pre- Columbian Indians. There is debate about the facts of these dogs history and could, in fact, go back to Malta in the Mediterranean, but this is seen through art work rather than a fact. There is also an idea that this dog came from China some 200 years ago. DNA suggests that it is of Old World origin, this form of analysis only checks on the mothers’ side so the fathers’ side is not clear or known. We know as a fact this dog has a long history in Mexico. With links to the Toltec breed, which are a slightly bigger dog and whose history goes back to 2nd century B. C.

Temperament: The Chihuahua dog is very territorial and can be very protective. With a temperament that can be easily provoked. This dog, though small in size needs good and strong leadership from the human, this dog is a pack dog and needs you to be the pack leader. This is often forgotten due to their small size and that is why a cloud of misinformation follows this breed. While they are protective and territorial this does not have to mean badly managed. Often it is us humans that change the rules, and we then get the bad behaviour. If this dog was bigger we would treat them as a dog and so have fewer problems. The answer is, they are a dog and need to be treated like a dog. The AKC describes this breed as “A graceful, alert, swift-moving little dog with saucy expression, compact with Terrier-like qualities of temperament”. These dogs are not recommended for children as the child may be inclined to treat this dog as not a dog, and so get problems. This dog is loyal, and does not get along with all other dogs but likes the company of other Chihuahuas. This breed loves attention, and are eager to please. Do not allow this breed to get small dog syndrome, as this allows negative problems for your dog.

This breed can be hard to potty train but with firm and consistent rules the dog gets there in the end. Small, this breed maybe but walks are still needed, not just for the exercise but also offering mental stimulation daily. By walk, it is meant as a walk not a carry. This doesn’t have to be a vast distances but variety allows interest for your dog.

Health issues: The Chihuahua can get a long list of problems due to their protruding eyes, and it is best to check this. Rheumatism and slipped stifle, colds and gum problems can accrue. In puppyhood care needs to be taken as they can get fractures. In some the skull does not close properly and this can cause problems. The breed also can suffer hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar, which is dangerous for the young puppy.

Living conditions: The Chihuahua is a good dog for apartment life. This dog loves warm weather and dislikes the cold. Just to note this is only a small dog physically, and while it is small it will still need space, even if in an apartment.

Posted under: Chihuahua Articles

Large breed dogs pose special grooming dilemmas. The Great Pyrenees and other Bernard family members have cornered the market on that special combination of girth and hair. Without a regimented grooming routine the Pyrenees’ flowing white locks can easily morph, soon resembling an electrocuted Komondor on steroid.

One obstacle to keeping large breeds in the peek of beauty is the difficulty in locating nail clippers, brushes and dental supplies suited to their substantial size. Substitution will have to be made. Still, with a little ingenuity grooming is a snap.

Body Brushing

Combing out the Great Pyrenees is a challenge. The high-stung nature of the breed makes them tend to wiggle around during grooming. In fact, these stealth dogs are apt to sprint off if not restrained, sometimes moving up to three centimeters in a single afternoon.

Your best bet for body brushing or raking is to work on your pet while he is asleep. Avoid active times such as 6:00 to 6:03 a. m. and the 30 minutes after sunset Pyrenees’ devote solely to barking. This breed is known to sleep with its eyes open. When stalking them with grooming tools be cautious. Once you are with in 65 feet of your dog, listen for a train. This verifies your dog is snoring.

A weed eater is an efficient option for quickly working your way through the shrubs to the actual hair prior to brushing.

Nail Clipping

Clipping your Pyrenees’s claws should be a regular part of your grooming routine. Before beginning this procedure head for the hardware store. Pick up a large metal rasp and bolt cutters. Once claws have been neatly trimmed call in HAZMAT to remove the clippings from your home. Don’t forget the dewclaws.

Great Pyrenees’ have a multitude of extra toes just kinda ‘hangin’ out’ on their lower legs. Hiding amongst them are a total of six massive curly toenails. Each is so large it makes a valosaraptor claw look like a minute droplet of Chihuahua snot. Don’t let the dewclaws go unattended more than a few weeks. Negligence will yield a clipping big enough to be used as a spiral staircase.

Dental Care

Dog owners often overlook the importants of good oral hygiene. Fortunately, in the Bernard breeds, their mouths offer plenty of room to work in. Take advantage of this trait. You can create ample access to the mouth by simply pulling their massive floppy lips up from both sides of the face. Then, use three clothespins to secure them to one another across the bridge of the nose. You may also secure a single lip to the opposing ear in a similar fashion.

Once the teeth are exposed insert a shop vac tube under your dogs tongue. This technique is identical to that of the ‘spit sucker’ used in a dental offices. A fifteen-gallon vac should suffice. Once the shop vac is fired up the Great Pyrenees will start to awaken. You will have about two hours to completely remove large pieces of sod stored along the gum line before your dog hits full cognitive thought. At this point he’ll eat the vacuum prior to falling back asleep.

As a final touch, clean you canine’s feet. Shinny up between the pads with a flashlight, some pliers and a bottle of WD 40. Remove stones, dried bats, milk carton children and anything else not belonging up there. Once this task is done your grooming regiment is complete. Wake your dog by simple uttering the word ‘cookie. ‘ By the time you get to ‘coo’ every Great Pyrenees in a six mile radius will be in your kitchen.

With a little work and a few trips to Home Depot, your Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernard or Newfoundland will glow with beauty. When you combine all this glamour with their high intelligence and magnetic personalities, your dog will be the envy of the neighborhood.
