I have much experience owning medium to large dogs, but caring for very small dogs is quite different, and I recently and unexpectedly became the owner of two small chihuahua puppies. They are now 12 weeks old. I am muddling my way through, and trying to do my best to care for them properly. I have done some research and have seen that the small pups can suffer from low blood sugar if they go too long between meals. I have been pretty much free feeding them thus far because I was fearful of this. I would however like to get them on some sort of better feeding schedule to help with housebreaking. My questions is, at 12 weeks, should they be eating 2, 3, or 4 times a day? How many hours between meals is it safe for them to go? What time should I give them their last meal in the evening, so that they have plenty of time to potty before bedtime, to prevent accidents? Are they ok to go through the night without eating, or is that too long? Also, with the water, I leave it out for them at all times. I really don’t want to limit their water, but they seem to pee pee A LOT. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
