How to train a timid dog?
We recently adopted a 10-month-old pup from the local Humane Society. He had been kept in foster care for about a month, and is already crate-trained and housebroken. I have had some success in teaching him to sit, but neither I nor my SO have been able to leash train him. He pulls constantly and likes to run around in circles, which gets him tangled up in his leash. When we tell him “no”, he freaks out and gets very scared and timid. This happens sometimes when we tell him “no” for other things (like eating cat crunchies), but most often when he is being walked. Often, he tries to pull out of his collar or hide under a bush, and sometimes he even wets himself.
We don’t know his previous history, so it is entirely possible that he was abused as a younger puppy. He is also likely part Chihuahua, which might affect his temperment. How can we get him to trust us, but still obey us?
